Get Certified The Advanced Comprehensive Manual Therapist (ACMT) certification is a tier 1 certification earned by physical therapists who demonstrate the highest level of advanced and evidence-informed orthopaedic manual physical therapy (OMPT) skills. A clinician with the ACMT designation represents someone who is an expert orthopaedic physical therapist with advanced training in a wide range of OMPT skills. The clinician with the ACMT designation integrates advanced clinical reasoning, pain neuroscience, and OMPT technical skills combined with comprehensive exercise prescription to skillfully screen, manage, and treat their patients. The ACMT is differentiated from the CMT by the advanced technical skills required across an eclectic spectrum of OMPT practice as well as the comprehensiveness of the examination process.
Clinicians who wish to earn The Advanced Comprehensive Manual Therapist Certification must successfully complete all courses listed below, as well as a comprehensive written and practical exam:
CT: Comprehensive Management of the Cervicothoracic Region (Cost: $495)
This course focuses on skilled examination and manual therapy treatment of the cervical and thoracic spine – including the upper cervical spine and junctional regions. Clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice are underscored throughout instruction utilizing thrust and non-thrust manual techniques and exercise. Learning is enhanced with the practical application of patient cases. This is a lab-intensive course with the majority of time spent in skill acquisition with supervised practice encouraged.
UQ: Comprehensive Management of the Upper Quarter (Cost: $495)
This course focuses on skilled examination and manual therapy treatment of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. Clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice are underscored throughout instruction utilizing thrust and non-thrust manual techniques, neurodynamics, and exercise. Learning is enhanced with the practical application of patient cases. This is a lab-intensive course with the majority of time spent in skill acquisition with supervised practice encouraged.
LP: Comprehensive Management of the Lumbopelvic Region (Cost: $495)
This course focuses on skilled examination and manual therapy treatment of the lumbar spine and pelvis. Clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice are underscored throughout instruction utilizing thrust and non-thrust manual techniques, neurodynamics, and exercise. Learning is enhanced with the practical application of patient cases. This is a lab-intensive course with the majority of time spent in skill acquisition with supervised practice encouraged.
LQ: Comprehensive Management of the Lower Quarter (Cost: $495)
This course focuses on skilled examination and manual therapy treatment of the hip, knee, ankle and foot. Clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice are underscored throughout instruction utilizing thrust and non-thrust manual techniques, neurodynamics, and exercise. Learning is enhanced with the practical application of patient cases. This is a lab-intensive course with the majority of time spent in skill acquisition with supervised practice encouraged.
TM1: Thrust Manipulation 1 – Lower Extremity & Basic/Intermediate Spine (Cost: $495)
This 2-day lab intensive course focuses on enhancing the participant’s background knowledge, clinical reasoning process, and technical skill set related to the use of high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust manipulation techniques in the management of patients with spinal or lower extremity impairments. Participants can expect to become proficient with common manipulative techniques directed to the lower extremity joints and with basic and intermediate techniques directed to the cervical, lumbar, and thoracic spinal regions. Furthermore, evidence based approaches and reasoning related to the appropriate use of spinal manipulation will be emphasized.
TM2: Thrust Manipulation 2 – Upper Extremity & Advanced Spine (Cost: $495)
This 2-day lab intensive course is designed to follow MT1 and further refine clinical reasoning and develop more advanced technical skill in regards to effective & appropriate use of high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust manipulation techniques in the management of patients with spinal or upper extremity impairments. More advanced and technically skilled spinal techniques and manipulation of the upper cervical spine will be emphasized, in addition to manipulative techniques targeting the upper extremity.
DN1: Dry Needling of the Lumbar Region & Lower Quarter – A Comprehensive Approach (Cost: $795)
This 3-day course is part I of our two-part introduction to dry needling coursework. This course will focus on skill acquisition of the dry needling technique and clinical reasoning for implementing the intervention for the lumbopelvic region and lower quarter. Participants can expect to become proficient with identification of trigger points and treatment using dry needling. Safety with dry needling is emphasized with each technique. Furthermore, evidence based approaches for the use of dry needling will be emphasized – including non-trigger point approaches targeting pain modulatory pathways.
DN3: Advanced Dry Needling (Cost: $525)
This 2-day course focuses on advancing skills of dry needling technique and clinical reasoning for implementing the intervention. Participants can expect to be proficient with identification of trigger points and treatment using dry needling of structures not covered in previous DN courses. Safety with dry needling is emphasized with each technique as we instruct DN of structures that are close in proximity to neurovascular bundles and other sensitive structures. Furthermore, evidence based approaches for the use of dry needling will be emphasized, including various types of needle stimulation.
MPS: Modern Pain Science (Cost: $300)
This course focuses on enhancing the participant’s knowledge and understanding of how pain works and how it can impact those affected by it. In addition, an emphasis is placed on the clinical reasoning processes and technical skills related to effective patient communication, clinical management, and pain neuroscience education.
MTX: Skilled Integration of Manual Therapy and Exercise (Cost: $495)
Improve exercise prescription along the continuum of the rehab process. Principles of exercise are reviewed and analyzed regarding implementation, namely through “phase progression.” The ability to make initial intervention choices and HEP prescription more impactful will be strengthened by matching common manual interventions and impairments to therapeutic exercise to maximize intersession gains. Advanced exercise progressions will be demonstrated and clinical reasoning will be explained so that the concept of “phase progression” is applied. Techniques to help bridge gaps in treatment progression will be discussed, specifically, PNF will be shown as an intervention to progress from passive manual intervention to independent active movement.
