Course Rationale

Upper extremity disorders are commonly encountered in the orthopedic physical therapy population. There is increased demand for evidence-based treatments in order to reduce variability in practice. This course teaches a standardized approach to examination and treatment these conditions utilizing the best current evidence, which includes manual therapy and exercise.

Course Objectives

Participants will utilize evidence informed examination and interventions within a clinical reasoning framework for enhanced clinical outcomes with a particular emphasis on active and passive motion testing in a standardized fashion

Participants will be able to identify key diagnostic and treatment studies for upper extremity dysfunctions

Participants will discuss contraindications related to upper extremity treatments, including performance of a thorough cervical screen and neuro exam to determine any contributions from the spine for upper extremity symptoms

Participants will demonstrate proficiency with techniques for the upper extremity and justify these techniques using clinical reasoning and application of current best evidence.

Participants will perform selected techniques including upper extremity manipulation and mobilization.
