Vestibular Certification

The Certified Vestibular Therapist  (Cert. VT) is a certification earned by physical therapists and occupational therapist who demonstrate the highest level of evidence-informed vestibular rehabilitation.  A clinician with the Cert. VT designation represents someone who is expertly trained in differential diagnosis of vestibular impairments, demonstrates mastery of canalith repositioning techniques, is proficient in concussion identification and management, and demonstrate expertise in vestibular rehabilitation therapy.  This therapist combines advanced differential diagnosis, expert examination techniques, concussion evidence based theories and vestibular hypofunction therapy to effectively treat patients with vestibular disorders.

Clinicians who wish to earn the Vestibular Therapist Certification (Cert. VT) must successfully complete all courses listed below, as well as a comprehensive written and practical exam:

VR | CM | VCC

VR: Vestibular Rehab: BPPV and Vestibular Hypo-Function

This is a comprehensive course and will include differential assessment, skilled evaluative techniques, special tests, and strategic treatment of vestibular pathologies, hypo function and cervical dizziness.

CM: Concussion Management

This two-day introductory course in Concussion Management will cover the lifespan of a concussion from the acute injury to post-concussive management. The participants will obtain general neuro-anatomy and physiology of a concussion including prevalence and incidence rates. Following the “anatomy” of a concussion, the course will cover baseline performance testing and sideline tests to be performed for the concussed athlete, but will not only be singled out for athletes.  The course will also cover clinical testing, including subjective and objective examinations, allowing for differential diagnosis and one-on-one assessment for the individual.  A brief review of BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) and treatment will be covered for this population.  Appropriate vestibular rehabilitation protocols will be addressed for this population with cognitive challenges applied.  Finally, patient and family education on return to sport, school, and work will be discussed.

VCC – Vestibular Certification Course

This course is a comprehensive 3-day program for clinicians from various disciplines to obtain competency in differential diagnosis of the vestibular system, vestibular treatment and concussion management.  Topics covered include: treatment efficacy in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular hypo-function retraining, concussion management, vestibular differential diagnosis that instills confidence in the practitioner to successfully rule out significant pathology, and summaries of the most recent evidence.  This 3-day course develops superior proficiency in state-of-the-art diagnostics, treatment and education.  The Certified Vestibular Therapist certification is designed to take novice vestibular/concussion trained therapists to mastery level.  This is the final course in a 3-course series (Vestibular Rehab and Concussion Management are required) that includes case studies, objective structured clinical examination, and a written and practical comprehensive final examination.  Upon completion of the course with a competency score of 80% or better the therapist is awarded Cert. VR, designating the therapist with a certification in Vestibular Rehabilitation and identifying them as a therapist with specific training to help those with vestibular/concussion therapy needs.
