Course Rationale

Lumbar and pelvic disorders are the most commonly encountered in the orthopedic physical therapy population. There is increased demand for evidence-informed treatments in order to reduce variability in practice. This course teaches a standardized approach to examination and treatment of these conditions using the treatment-based classification system consistent with current physical therapy clinical practice guidelines.

Course Objectives

  • Participants will utilize evidence-informed examination of the lumbar spine and pelvis, with a particular emphasis on active and passive motion testing in a standardized fashion.
  • Participants will synthesize and analyze data from the examination of the lumbar spine and pelvis based on signs and symptoms and treatment-based classification systems.
  • Participants will be able to identify key diagnostic and treatment studies for lumbar spine and pelvis dysfunctions.
  • Participants will demonstrate proficiency with techniques for lumbar spine and pelvis and justify these techniques using clinical reasoning and application of current best evidence.
  • Participants will discuss contraindications related to the lumbar spine and pelvis interventions.
  • Participants will perform selected techniques including lumbar spine and pelvis manipulation and mobilization.
