TM1: Thrust Manipulation 1 – Lower Extremity & Basic/Intermediate Spine

$495.00

This course focuses on enhancing the participant’s background knowledge, clinical reasoning process, and technical skill set related to the use of high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust manipulation techniques in the management of patients with spinal or lower extremity impairments. Participants can expect to become proficient with common manipulative techniques directed to the lower extremity joints and with basic and intermediate techniques directed to the cervical, lumbar, and thoracic spinal regions. Furthermore, evidence based approaches and reasoning related to the appropriate use of spinal manipulation will be emphasized.

Course Rationale

The use of spinal and extremity thrust manipulation has been an important aspect of physical therapist practice for decades, and a wealth of literature in the 21st century has demonstrated that manipulation can be a valuable tool with local, regional, and widespread effects. Thrust manipulation is currently mandated to be taught in CAPTE-accredited entry-level PT programs. However, many graduates who choose to specialize in musculoskeletal care wish to continue their training and enhance their skill beyond that of their entry-level education. This course meets that need and will foster proficiency for those seeking to further their skills.

Course Objectives

  • At the conclusion of this program, the learner will be able to:
  • Implement a collaborative learning approach to advance understanding of the use of thrust manipulation techniques for the cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine, and joints of the lower extremity.
  • Apply evidence based principles in the use of thrust manipulation directed to the cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine, joints of the lower extremity.
  • Critically appraise the literature regarding evidence for thrust manipulation of the cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine, and joints of the lower extremity.
  • Detect precautions and contraindications to thrust manipulation.
  • Clinically reason which patients may benefit from the use of thrust manipulation techniques.
  • Discuss the use of thrust manipulation by physical therapists to patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Review and discuss APTA and AAOMPT positions on thrust manipulation.
  • Proficiently and safely perform thrust manipulation techniques directed to the cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine, and joints of the lower extremity.
  • Provide the appropriate integration of thrust manipulation as part of a comprehensive treatment program for patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction, including the use of other interventions.
  • Articulate legal and ethical issues related to thrust manipulation.
